I have experienced the so called death wobble (as opposed to a "shimmy" ) one (1) time in my life and I NEVER, EVER want that experience again!!! Belive it or not it was the tag axle on a 4 axle Peterbilt. The load was light enough to not need the tag but with a fixed 5th wheel too far forward to do without it being down legally. I was going about 25 on an on ramp and saw the tires start to slowly wiggle on the tag and in an instant they just let loose and shook the whole truck violently enough I nearly cracked my head on the door glass. I would find it hard to belive it was that harsh at such a low speed had I not experienced it. I can't even imagine what could have happened at 60 MPH. I got it stopped, picked up the tag and called the dispatcher advising him what happened. Told him I was lifting the tag, knew my way around the Woodburn scale, would deliver the load and then I was bringing it straight to the shop to get fixed and nowhere else! It did get fixed as I ran it again after that with no issues. Don't know what was done for repair though.

Haaaa, there ya go there now, that 'splains it all!

Pretty sure Russ nailed the cause. No wobble on my '90 4WD Ram, until I swapped on some large, very worn unbalanced tires: instant wobble! I always considered a 'shimmy' to be that mild shake R/L in front end. The 'DW' effect on my Dodge is 10 times that, dramatic, a real wake up! Heard that with a manual steering truck it can rip the wheel right out of your hands, don't know personally.

Had to replace front axle u-joint on that truck, did help the wobble some, don't know why?? U-joints could be a lot beefier, especially considering it's a 1 ton.

Me, I prefer the 12 valve, or in my case 8 valve on a 4BTA, for the utter simplicity. Older I get the harder it is to figure out the complicated stuff...

The death wobble is not a new phenomena by any means. Dads first 4x4 was a '41 WC that had it if you hit a RR crossing or hard bump at anything over 30 MPH or even less sometimes. We have had issues with it on just about every 4x4 I have been around although I don't think on my '67 at all. We said the front end had a shimmy. Usually related to front tire balance but not always.

I have found as the fronts get older and worn there becomes slop which tends to allow a shimmy (or DW) much sooner and easier than normal. The tie rod mounted shocks came out to help control it way back when. It has not been limited to Doges or even to the newer style coil spring front end, supposedly a crappy design invented by Dodge if you believe the Cummins forums. I know better becuase I'm old enough to have been around when this stuff happened. Most of the guys on the Cummins forums are the age of my kids and some could be my grandkids but some seem to have all the answers.

I've been very happy with my '01 CTD. I did finally put a Raptor lift pump on it probably 5 years ago or more and has not missed a beat. Why Cummins chose to use that crummy Carter lift pump is beyond my comprehension. They didn't last in the 60's and are no better now.

I do like the 24 valve because you can turn the power up by just installing a box. I have an untapped Edge Comp and I can change settings on the fly. I haven't tapped the pump because the tranny only has a Dunrite VB and will not hold the power for very long, if at all.

I'm not sure on the front ends either, Russ. My '90 gets the infamous 'Death wobble' which is what I was thinking about on problems, also had u-joint problems like others have. Not sure if death wobble & u-joints are related, probably not.

But yes, the weaker front end was the later ones as you say. From what I've heard, not personal experience, they're a real mutha to try to repair too!

I agree with Jimmy about the EGT's. Those morons claiming to run 15-1600* temps WILL take out a piston or worse eventually. I don't know what they think is so cool about being stupid. Probably the same guys claiming 25+ MPG with 37" tires. I have been around class 8 rigs most of my adult life and 1250 is the prescribed absolute long term pulling limit for EGT temps. I do understand the CR engines can run a bit higher but I would have to see that from Cummins before I would run temps like that.

I am not sure but I don't think there was a big issue with front axle U-joints until the second Gen rigs ('94) came out. That's when the axle change came about along with the coil front. I think the '93's were the last of the real good front axles.

Not everybody has front end trouble as I have over 178,000 on my '01 and a track bar is the only front end issue I have had so far. Hope I didn't jinx myself with that statement. (drv)

fine. Do as Chris suggested and check on the www.sweptline.org
voltage limiter in the Search box in the upper right
Or, as JimmieD suggested, search this forum for information

Wow, '93 LE Editions are rare! Plus '93 is the best year of all for Dodge CTD's! Has the all mechanical Bosch VE fuel pump that's real easy to tweak. At that mileage it isn't even broken in yet!

May I very stongly suggest you install a Pyrometer ASAP? That monitors combustion chamber temperatures, at the exhuast manifold just pre-turbo. Yours is probably aftercooled but regardless, if EGT's [Exhaust Gas Temperatures] get above 1,250-1,300 degrees sustained on a hard pull you can melt pistons before you can even shut the engine off, no warning before it's toast. Lots of bull out there about guys claiming 1,500* no problem, and 3 times as many that can tell you about toasted engines at 1,300*.

Also a Boost Gauge is fun, to monitor what your turbo is doing. The more turbo boost the more fuel you can add, easily with a VE pump, and safely with an Aftercooler and Pyrometer.

If it's an auto be mindful of fluid & filters, even anal, 'cause the Cummins is pushing that tranny to the limits. They like to eat torque converters. A LARGE auxiliary tranny cooler is a real good idea too.

If it's 4WD the front axle u-joints require religious attention, not well designed, a weak spot.

All the info should be there in those links however one page is a bit techie. The original gauge & voltage limiter article by Richard Ehrenberg is on the Mopar Action Magazine website as well.

The info has been posted many times here on this forum by me, like for about the last 5-6+ years, until folks grabbed those links etc. from here and carried them off to the other forum tech section. Suit yourself.

Hi John!

Here's some links to electrical tech info on that. The Radio Shack parts mentioned in Rick Ehrenberg's article consist of a Radio Shack 272-1014 22mfd Electrolytic Capacitor, and a Radio Shack 216-1770A +5VDC 1 Amp Voltage Regulator, and most any little heat sink that fits your space.

I couldn't access original page at Mopar Muscle Magazine forum this AM.

Original page also archived at Imperial Club Forum:

Another page on the Voltage Regulator:

Amp gauge fix:

That should get you going. You can also use an add-on fuel gauge, 12VDC, as long as the Ohm range is correct. Stewart Warner says its 0-2 ohms empty, 73 ohms full, Moparts Forum says 10 empty, 73 full:
