Hey guys, just a 'Get ready for winter time' reminder here. We need more electrical in winter for lights & heater fan etc. so I thought I'd share:
Had to repair a wire to one of my horns today & noticed how funky the battery terminals had gotten, in a very short time too. There was nasty white corrosion all over wire ends, terminals etc. Spent about an hour disconnecting [negative first, Terry
] & cleaning & reassembling. I cleaned all grounds thoroughly because corrosion migrates more to ground from current flow.
Probably wouldn't have noticed it until everything quit in the dark on a mountain road late at night. Then ya find out the flashlight batteries are dead too! I grabbed another flashlight & new batteries, plus an extra pack of new ones & tossed them in the truck for good measure.
Another thing Terry & Norm will know about: don't use residential/commercial or industrial wire [type TW, TWN, THWN, THHN] for your truck stuff. I had piles of leftovers from work & had used some THWN to wire up my horns. That's why the wire broke!
Non-automotive wire is much heavier individual strands made of a different alloy of copper [harder] that won't easily flex. It won't resist vibration & will get stress fractures & break in half, one strand at a time. Auto stuff has more & smaller conducters so it can handle vibration. Non-auto type can start breaking one strand at a time, slowly lowering current flow.
