This is probably a simple thing but how do you remove the carrier bearing from the drive shaft? I have the drive shaft out but the carrier seems to be rusted on or pressed on? I have never changed one of these before. The housing is coming off the rubber, old and weathered and the covers (slingers?

I have never changed one of these before. The housing is coming off the rubber, old and weathered and the covers (slingers?) are loose. What do the slingers do anyway?........keep out debris?
