Got the front brake drum replaced and added new shoes. Works a lot better now, well of course, the old drum was grooved like a small Grand Canyon.

Good article, I like pictures. For the time being I will stick with drums cheaper to replace the bad one. For future the article has been bookmarked. Thanks

Quoteswptln I've run over 400hp on 10" drums with no problem at all. Problem is a lot of people don't know how to adjust and or properly slow down with drum brakes and the transmission. In reality disc brakes are for lazy people Or old farts like me. I figure it is the same as a sail boat, when coming into port get ready to drop sail or throw out the anchor a way ahead.

Me also Wally, the old trucks stopped OK given driving conditions at the time they were designed with lower speeds, narrower roads and less traffic. I avoid freeways and leave more space between me and other vehicles than drivers do today. My truck loves the cruz at 50 mph or lower.OK by me

More than what I first suspected. Scare Bird plates, rotors, calipers, proportioning valve, dual master cylinder and hubs. Old style drum style seems more attractive.

I have been investigating the cost of replacing the front drums and wheel cylinders, and thought the conversion to disc might be within the prices I'm finding for even used drums. As you know I have asked to buy used and you suggested looking into the conversion. Scare Bird has the disks and in addition I would need the proportioning line valve as well as a dual master cylinder. Any o

If you are at the point of removing to whole rear, you may want to consider replacing it with a later non tapered axle rear end. But first try this : reinstall the the nut and washer no cotter key on the axle. but do not tighten even leave it loose just run it up by hand, readjust the brake shoes no lug nuts. Then get in fire it up and shift into low roll roll it brake then reverse roll it brake

Haven't been on the forum very much over the few years , so wanted to say hello ....again. Had a project short utiline that I sold, due to time and realistically energy or the lack of. Here is the 64 long bed I still own when first signed up here. About five years ago.

Hope you don't mind if I deviate from the subject. Is the flywheel cover in Norm's pictures of the bells, the same as a manual bell for a Poly V8 ?

Great story. How does he contact the outside world or is he just a hermit type? 200 acres is a lot of ground to cover with cars and trucks. I would like to see pictures also.

Got mine from Napa. Felpro brand. No idea on it's performance. As Gordo sez use a lot of penetrating oil time, days if needed,on nuts before removing. I sheared a stud. When reinstalling torque no more than 10 lbs. Start at center and work out alternate each side.

I'm in Riverside Calif. I bought a door handle few years back, from you. What you have is a slant six 727 combo? Wally is right "road trip " but not for awhile.

That is what I would like to do. I have another 64 with a 318 poly that is a better candidate. That one is a keeper, the /6 don't know yet. I have a habit of doing too many things at a time

Weren't 6 the standard engine and 318 an option ? Or am I wrong ? Wonder why they would be hard to find. 904 were car trans right. Just read your explanation again, early trucks... ok getting the rarity. When was the drum brake dropped ?

Were trucks equipped with a 904 that had the brake drum ? If so,is there any difference in the input shaft and the crank of a manual shift /6. I'm guessing here obviously don't know much about the drive lines. I know there will be a relocation or ad a trans tail support.

Here is my dilemma, well better said "desire" My 64 short bed utiline D100 for sale has little buying interest,so far. Possibly might be a good candidate to convert to an automatic if I keep it. It has a 225 /6 that I wouldn't mined keeping. The 3 speed column has the drum parking brake, and a 3.91 third member. Converting to automatic just makes it more appealing for city

Kaegi. Don't always trust Napa to be correct. Their computer system is only as good as the person inputting data. I had a problem finding a rebuilt starter. Only until a knowledgeable counter person looked at the old one, and recognized it, then got the correct starter. Don't know how he did it ?
