Dana is,or was,a division of Spicer,so its six of one,half dozen of the other. As far as the front being wider than the rear,it needs to be to turn. In many instances,not having your rear wheels in the same track as the front can give you better traction.
Maybe that narrow rear axle was a good way to save weight.
