IT IS FIXED. The problem was that the wrong sending unit was sold to me, with the explanation that the sending unit was for the 61-69 tanks, but if I rotated the unit 180 degrees when installing it , it would be fine. WRONG WRONG WRONG. Thanks to a call from BUD at Power Wagons, I learned that the 70-71 tanks are higher (and hold more fuel), then the 61-69 tanks, so the shorter sending unit will show empty when there is still about 3/8 of a tank. Also the 61-69 sending unit float will hit on the side of the tank and NOT go to the top to indicate a full tank. SO, do not use the shorter 61-69 sending unit in the 70-71 trucks. I now have a proper length, and clocked 70-71 unit in my 71 truck and it operates perfectly! The truck has been "resting" for the winter until a couple of days ago when I started it and went for a ride and put about 10 gals. of gas in. The gauge responded perfectly. GREAT!
