Consider the shift pattern of a 540. In a 5th direct trans, you pull back on the lever to lock the mainshaft to the input shaft. That is true also in a 5th over.

My point? If it is an overdrive trans, the position normally used for 4th becomes the 5th [overdrive]position. So, you can't put it into the normal 5th position and tell. You need to put it into the normal 4th position to tell by counting revolutions when turning it by hand.
