By some fluke one evening (right place at the right time...;-), I happened onto a 1970 W300 Dually with a GIANT service box (10' long!) while driving home (it wasn't there that morning), basically my dream truck, although a '64-65 would have been even sweeter... But I've always dreamed of a service box... could never do it with my '65 4 headlight W200 (just sold a few years ago, to a friend, but still regretting it) on account on the wheelbase (121" was it?). That earlier shorter cab/axle length, prior to them switching it out for the longer (155"?) cab/axle length because of campers becoming more popular at that time (mid '65?). The earlier service beds are pretty hard to find, available for the taking...
Anyhoo, I stopped, looked it all over. Really nice shape, obviously a wheat farmer's trap wagon, all service records since 1976 (when they bought it from a guy out of Priest River, Idaho) were sitting on the front seat, oil change every 1000 miles, incredible amount of maintenance, brand new brakes...
I called, talked to his wife, says he's on his way to town, call him on his cell. I call him, bad reception, get right to the point, what do you want for it? The answer is so ridiculous that I can only ask "when can I meet you there?" 8pm that night.
We met him, got the truck, and I spent the next couple days cleaning up the compartments with solvent, making cardboard liners for all the cubbyholes, and then putting tools in it. Man, it really freed up some space in my toolshed, the woodshed, and every other dang place that was crammed full of tools, oils, parts, logging/rescue equipment, rags, etc, etc, etc!
I'm thinking about doing one of the Chrysler V Twin A/C compressor type of air compressor install, if anyone has the info/parts list on that. It used to be pretty popular way back when...
Anyway, it's the biggest, nicest toolbox I've ever had, just the cat's meow for fixin up "Big Al", the [Plum Crazy Purple?] D300 sittin next to it, coming along quite nicely ;-) Btw, what's a "435 D2"? That's the designation for the trans in Big Al. Joann has a whiny ol 420 with that funky shift lever, as spec-ed right on the tag. No synchro in or out of second (can be exciting on a steep hill either goin up or down...) The gear whine brings back memories of the old Weapons Carrier...
The first pic is Joann, my ’64 D200 (Poly/4sp), Big Al our new ’65 (4 headlight, love it!) D300 Wonton Dooley (Poly/4sp), and Big Jim or “Jimboâ€... THE Service Truck (318/4sp)! There’s actually 3 more trucks, Irene a ’63 D100 (Poly/4sp), Ralph ’68 D200 (318/4sp), and The Scheisswagen aka affectionately as the "shit truck" ’66 D200 (360/4sp, the whole truck is beat nearly to death, driver's side door actually falling off of it, being retired…)
