I made a tool out of 3/8" rebar to do that job. I made a T handle and the other end for the spring I made into a U shaped hook I also formed it to sort of fit to the curvature of the spring mount. I hook it into the spring end and work it round the mount so I can pull it toward the front of the rig. A bit like a brake spring pliers which is where I think I got the idea. 
Comes off pretty good that way but it doesn't do any of the painted stuff any good.
