Save the paperwork (old registrations) from the California DMV that links those black plates to that VIN. If the truck ever winds up back on the West Coast the owner may need to prove (with DMV documents) that the plates belong. The new fancy intersection auto red light cameras don't pick up the black plates nor the blue plates well and they want them gone according to one DMV official I spoke with.
Currently the DMV will not allow anyone to retro fit old plates on any car newer than 1963 which was the first year of the black plates in California.
If anyone is missing a plate from their black plate era rig or if anyone is restoring their rig and want a new set made, consider [
www.black-plate.com] They are indistinguishable from the originals. Just remember, original black plates had only 6 digits.
