Yes, it can be done.Norm has done it.Frankie has done it. I have done it,just to name a few.
I like the 91-93 Dodge dana 60 axle best(80-90 are ok too). They can be found in the single rear wheel 1 tons or the 3/4 ton cummins trucks. They average $1000 in price,but will save you money in the long run,as they are very beefy.I put a used D60 in front of my 68 and drove it trouble free for 60,000 mi,Didn't even need brakes.

Major concerns...shock mounts, power steering.
