I have a pretty nice original 70,D200,383,727.power steering, and air conditioning. I am kicking around the idea of media blasting it, putting it in epoxy primer, and spraying it with the original poly gold color. The problem i am having is that i am removing 40 plus years of cool, the original paint on the tailgate letters, the factory pin striping, all the holes have meaning, all the scratches and dings have all been part of this trucks "life", the paint on the hood is gone, it is rusting I need to do something but if i try to restore it, it will never be the same.
I ask myself what I want/need, right now I have an old original truck, if I toss 3k into paint and body work, what will I have?
I feel if you don't do it all the way, and all the way right, all you have left is an old truck with new paint on it.
I have done some restoring and modernizing to this truck, nothing that can not be undone.
I have replaced the ignition system (HEI), had the transmission rebuilt, replaced the cooling system (heater core, radiator and water pump), redone the interior (new carpet, headliner and had the seat recovered),all new brakes, new tires, on new 16' steel wheels (got rid of the split rims),new exhaust ( manifolds, mufflers and all new aluminumized pipe) and tons of "little " things (too much to list).
the only reason I am keeping this truck is that it belonged to my grandfather who worked 30 plus years at the dodge dealer where he bought this truck. there has been 4 generations of Hartwigs that have driven this old truck.
I don't think this would be a vehicle I would choose to restore, nor is it a truck I would buy and spend money on, my time and money would be wisely spent on another Chrysler product, such as a roadrunner or charger. The truck was given to me after my grandfathers death, I would say i have about 6-7k into it as it sits now.
So? should I continue with the restoration or should I just try to preserve what I have? If I do spend 3k on body and paint, along with, the 6-7k I have in it now, what will i have? I have not yet touched the inside of engine, there is another 2-3k
is it worth the effort and money?
Terry, remember when I started this mess, didn't I offer it to you for 2k?
