The reason for the pressure cap is that it allows the water to get hotter before turning into vapor/steam at boiling. If you use a strong mix of coolant, with radiator cap cracked to first notch, you have coolant protection but not to quite as high a temperature. Engine is protected, watch that gauge, yet it doesn't blow out the coolant under pressure. Stop gap, get you by until you discover the full problem.
