I have experienced the so called death wobble (as opposed to a "shimmy" ) one (1) time in my life and I NEVER, EVER want that experience again!!! Belive it or not it was the tag axle on a 4 axle Peterbilt. The load was light enough to not need the tag but with a fixed 5th wheel too far forward to do without it being down legally. I was going about 25 on an on ramp and saw the tires start to slowly wiggle on the tag and in an instant they just let loose and shook the whole truck violently enough I nearly cracked my head on the door glass. I would find it hard to belive it was that harsh at such a low speed had I not experienced it. I can't even imagine what could have happened at 60 MPH. I got it stopped, picked up the tag and called the dispatcher advising him what happened. Told him I was lifting the tag, knew my way around the Woodburn scale, would deliver the load and then I was bringing it straight to the shop to get fixed and nowhere else! It did get fixed as I ran it again after that with no issues. Don't know what was done for repair though.
