Seems I have a small exhaust leak in the crossover, when I originally took off the intake there was only the pressed tin gasket. When I took it back apart, the dopes at napa convinced me that I needed 2 of the paper type per side one top and one on the bottom of the tin one. These paper ones are th

Yes, on the big blocks using the thin gaskets on both side of the valley pan works well. I always use both, this way you will not get any intake or exhaust leaks. I use permatex aviation gasket cement on both side of the thin gaskets and haven't had a leak yet. It's messy doing it, but the aviation cement holds up well.
Using just the valley pan, unless both surfaces are machined clean will most likely leak.
Chrysler only used the valley pan and never used gaskets on there exhaust manifolds either, but they had the advantage of having perfect machined surfaces when putting everything together too.
