Last Summer, when we were in Alaska, we went on a "nature hike" with a biologist. He warned us about both the smaller Brown Bears and the Grizzlies and cautioned us to carry pepper spray and wear a small bell to alert the Brown Bears to our presence. The bell will often make the wary Brown Bear run away and if they don't, the pepper spray will repel them.
He also showed us the difference between Brown Bear scat and Grizzly scat. The Brown Bear scat being smaller and less firm from the pure vegetable diet and the Grizzly scat being larger, scattered with small bells and smelling like pepper.....grinning smiley
