I decided to check the lube in the steering box on my 71 D300.. It seems Dodge used two boxes for the Sweptlines, and my truck has the one made by Ross. After scraping off years of crud to find the filler hole, I discover what appears to be a slotted "bolt" on top. Guess this is the fille

Sounds like your making reference to the adjustment screw and lock nut.
As mentioned the fill plug, should be a pipe plug not a slotted screw.
