Used to work at a garage with a machine shop - owner/machinist dropped Comp and went (mostly) to Crane, not because of wipeout, but because the Comps kept coming out wrong when he degreed the engines. They would replace them with the right grind, but the loss of time was a nightmare.
What I have been hearing about cam wipeout is that it's just as often the lifters not being correctly ground as it is the cams, if not more so.
I think one problem is that flat-tappet cams have become an extremely tiny market - even a lot of us old car guys go with rollers these days, and niche markets are often subject to bad QC.
Another of course is outsourcing manufacture to the 3rd world.
