To finish my 1960 W500 Power Wagon, I sourced a 318 poly that I believe is a 318-3.
The engine is in and runs fine.
I can’t recall exactly, but I think the engine needed several peripheral parts.
However, the kit for rebuilding the engine may have had an oil dipstick tube that appears too long; I could not register any oil on the dipstick even with 6 quarts in it. From my research it was stated that the tube should be about 8” long. With some difficulty (due to clearance) I was able to shorten it. It is better now, I am in the ballpark, but I need to have about 7 quarts in there to see the oil level show at the bottom of the safe range on the dipstick.
My question is:
Is 8” the correct dipstick tube length?
We’re there different dipstick lengths?
Did the different 318 poly engines (1,2,3) have different sized oil pans?
Could this have an industrial or marine oil pan?
