There are phishers that send emails that look like emails sent from paypal and ebay. As long as you don't click to paypal from an email and instead go directly to paypal.com for maintenance then it is very unlikely that you can be hacked.
It may be inconvenient to have to manually transfer money from a paypal account to you bank so perhaps you could just do it every 2 months or so. However doing it should take less than a minute each time. Thats what it takes me as I use paypal.
The substantial additional funds received from phorum participants because of the ease and convenience to them may greatly outweigh the slight inconvenience of additional phorum management and modest processing fees.
Of course the alternative is to set up your own payment gateway via an online merchant account. An example is authorize.net, There are tons of other options as well including Bank of America where you already have a relationship. The money goes right into your bank account immediately.
I believe that having an online ability to accept member dues, have it be visible on the phorum, and mark users accordingly will increase dues from say 10% of current users to about 90%.
