its been about 7 years since i painted the challenger, so i'm trying to remember how to deal with this on my truck before I paint anything. POR treatment with the acid? i dont think you can simply just sand it through to metal i think it needs something.....

I use phosphoric acid sold premixed under name like rust buster. I have washed it off and even let it dry on the metal and painted over it with no problems. Have used it mostly on frames and spray bombed some rustoleum over it and held it fine. If you are doing a high $$ paint job ask someone who knows about painting.
