Well, I may have spoken too soon regarding the Registry scripts. I added a new template called DTA Classic Light, but it didn't make much difference in size.
-Edit: found the setting to turn off scripts, now the main forum page is 122K with no scripts or images. Trade off is you lose the formatting toolbar, too!
Another possibility, what is your setting for Message list display options? If you are using, "All messages in a topic, threaded", the size increases to 462K!
