Fish, My cousin runs a NAPA machine shop in Bend, OR and has mentioned doing this procedure in their shop sometimes. I'm reasonably sure he would chat with you about it if you need to. Let me know if you want to and I will PM his work #. He is pretty sharp on a lot of this stuff and would tell you if he didn't know.

Norm, I think the problem starts with Turbocharged engines like our diesels. K&N has a good rep except under these conditions. I think the filter is overpowered because of the huge amounts of air pushed by turbos and superchargers. Guys are finding dirt on turbo blades after installing the K&N's. I found the same issue on my rig after it came out of the shop where a filte

I think there is probably a reason the paper filters have virtually replaced oil bath and other type air cleaners. Other than cost and mess, that is. It is not at all unusual to get nearly a million miles out of class 8 diesels now and AFAIK they all use paper filters. The Cat in the truck I run turned over 703,684 miles when I parked 'er a couple hours ago. Never been apart and uses pap

QuoteMoparNorm I was with you until the K&N comment... Norm, I don't know if you hang out at any of the diesel forums but K & N doesn't get very good reviews in regards to use on our diesel rigs.

You can get a roller pilot bearing that uses the torque converter register to center it. I have one in my PW. Not sure if it would fit a poly. You may have to shorten the input a bit if your crank is not drilled for the standard pilot bushing.

Quoteswptln Yes, Terry is right, these are the ones I'm looking for. The ones Roberts has look real similar, I'll have to call him to get some measurements to make sure there right. Or I think as mentioned the newer 72-93 ones might be the same as well. I used the lower half (I think ) from the later ones and they seemed virtually identical to my original ones. The parts guy told m

Sorry to hear that but if a different rig is what you want then go for it. Hope we can still get together if I make it down there again.

Only place I have seen him was the other day and the class I took several months back where he and another vendor rep were the instructors. Didn't see the other guy or I didn't remember him. It's been awhile but as I recall they both had pretty good credentials as the instructors usually give you some information regarding their experience. I have taken a number of these classes

I've noticed the early hinges can bypass the stops and go on back to the cab. Maybe that's what yours are doing.

Terry, I'm sorry I didn't mention this was a supplier/vendor to Potter-Webster in PDX. They mostly supply class 6-8 equipment parts. Recently they acquired McKay Truck and RV in Albany so they will now also do repairs. P-W also carries travel trailer stuff I discovered several years ago. This was a big shindig for 70 years in business supplying the trucking industry. They ga

Up through '67 they are supposed to go to 90* and not beyond. The hinges get worn and loose and will go past the stops and hit the cab. The later ones are only supposed to go 70* I think it is. Would have to look in my '68 owners manual to see for sure but it is less than 90. Factory must have figured it out by '68.

For your information, this outfit also sells welding cable. They are not just automotive stuff. Soooo, once again I guess I need to send this guy here to talk to the experts????

I guess he needs to come talk to you guys then. I would think that if welding cable was better for battery use somebody in the trucking industry would be using it and it would be called----battery cable! I've never seen or heard of anyone doing that. Of course that doesn't mean it isn't used. Personally, since this is his job and he's been around this stuff as long as a

There was a post a while back where the subject of battery cables came up. I had taken an electrical trouble shooting class where the instructors stated to not ever use welding cable in place of battery cable. Of course when questioned about why, CRS had set in and I could not recall what the reason was. Today the same place had a "70 years in business" celebration with about 50 of t

Jimmie, That load rating can't be right. I have had several sets of 235/85x16's load range D and they were rated way more than 1400 lbs. At least double I think.

I have not had an overload for a looong time. I have been very lucky since I got red lighted last summer in the Gorge with about (unknowingly) 7 K over. Somehow they must have been busy with a couple others guys that apparently got nailed ahead of me. They check your papers and check tire size (660 lbs per inch of width) but I don't recall anybody checking the GVW of the truck. Most

There is a whole lot of misinformation every time the discussion of weight comes up. Dry weight and/or shipping weight doesn't mean squat. What counts is what your rig weighs when YOU drive it over a scale. I can almost guarantee it will be more than dry weight and likely more than shipping weight. When you actually weigh it that's called tare weight and that's what counts. Yo

Russ, I've been pulled and inspected several times over the years. Only trouble I ever had was when someone else loaded the rig and it had not been weighed. Could have used another axle under that load. Anyway, here in OR and WA the scale signs say if you are 20,000 GVW in OR and 16,000 in WA you have to go across the scale when it's open. That's for commercial rigs and not
