As Norm's images show the one spring pushes clutch pedal/lever back behind over-center position while the slave cylinder spring forces clutch lever arm back to rest position, expelling fluid from slave cylinder & up into brake master to maintain system pressure.

As an aside, we need to maintain free-play at both ends, that there's at least 1/4" [or more] of play topside before pedal engages master pushrod, and below, at least 1/4" [or more] before slave pushrod engages clutch lever.

I've found on mine with many different masters & slaves that about 3/8" top & bottom works pretty good, but I've also had near zero clearance at bottom which is okay if there's no drastic elevation change. When I was road-dogging it I found that more clearance might be needed down below at slave to maintain proper clearances despite frequent changes in relative atmospheric pressure, from driving high elevation to low elevation etc. kind of strange that?

One more thing: in a closed hydraulic system like this water migrates down to the lowest point, just as oil floats on the top of a body of water. So occasionally it's good to crack open the slave bleeder for a second and let the water out.
