Nah, I was unclear. Sorry.
When you take the regulator apart, there are two wires that go to the electromagnet coil. It's those tiny wires that have been vaporizing - when
one blows, the circuit stays closed on charge, and when the other one blows, the circuit remains open, though there is still a weak charge generated.
Seems like there's some kind of intermittent grounding problem that's causing it. No real surprise, the wiring isn't in fabulous shape, but I have not positively tracked it all down yet.
Easy enough to fix the regulator though, so it's an okay workaround, since the gauge works.
