If that confused them they probably shouldn't be working on it anyway.
Since the term "crank" came from the time when you actually stood in front and spun the engine with a real crank, I could argue that the term "crank" would never be correct at all if the car has a starter. But who wants to say "start the engine" when you can just say crank it up. We aren't going to agree on this so I'll just call it what I want to and you do the same.
