Couple things;

Is it wired backwards? When you turn on the headlights, engine off, does the needle go to the left of the right, if it goes to the right, it must be wired backwards, switch the wires in the back of the gauge.

A Voltmeter IS a much better gauge, but it must go off when you shut the truck off because it's a drain. From memory... when hooking up a Voltmeter, and disabling the Ammeter, you just connect the two big wires together (disconnet from the gauge) with a FAT machine screw (1/4-20?), lockwasher and nut, tighten very securely and wrap it as many times as you feel like - minimum three times - with friction tape.

Does anybody remember friction tape? Getting harder to find these days, most 20 somethings behind the counter have never even heard of it...
