Are the NP 420-435 transmissions supposed to take the same gear oil (90W/80-90W) as the diff?
Noticed the the "Hypoid gear lube GL5", has Sulphur that can cause corrosion of brass parts, synchros, etc. NAPA dude in town can'r shed any light on it, says "use the same in everything". Any oil experts here? Are you using a different lube in the trans? Do these trannies require hypoid lube because the don't have straight cut teeth, does that constitute a true hypoid gear oil application, or is that only the ring/pinion?
Blew a seal on Joann's Dana 60 input shaft coming back from Idaho to pickup a BIG canopy shell. Happened in the last 40 miles, after my last fluid check and the diff was just slightly down on fluid, but... the freakin nut was looseas a goose!!! Previous mechanic worked on it botched it up, also hammmered some nice dents in the seal area... What a moron! I got it all back together by now I'm worried I'm gonna lose the rear end in this one, and the truck has one helluva nice 4:10 Powr Lock in it, and I just can't deal with this possibility right now (financially or emotionally...). How much damage to the pinion bearings - and ring/pinion - could it have done running loose? It's never sounded bad, really caught me by surprise this one...
Also, did Dodge use lockwashers on the U joint strap bolts (I'd like a definitive answer here), sometimes you see em, some times you don't... and I've recently do a couple where half the bolts have lockwashers and the other half don't...
You get more thread in without the lockwasher, but of course more likely to stay tight with a lockwasher. I just want to do it the right way, as per the factory.
Hope everyone's having a great weekend ;-)
