ok lets be clear here, i did look at the pump the day after you suggested it, i just didnt see any problems. wasnt untill i went ahead and bought a new one, and did a comparison that i saw the minor difference in clearences that made a huge difference in performance. quit accusing me of not listening to advice.
i agree with the compression check. i had this exact thing happen to my chitty 4x4. long drawn out sand hill, hit the top, rpms came down and it ran like crap. turned out to be a blown head gasket between the siamesed cylinders and a broken upper ring. like you i had looked everywhere else first. compression test showed me real fast what was up.
