Can't imagine any reason an engine would backfire at idle, but if that is a problem then it's pretty obvious not to use the tubing as a stethoscope. Of course if its backfiring at idle it isn't a carb adjustment that the engine needs. Before Uni-Syn was invented the tubing stethoscope was the only easy way we had to balance multiple carbs.
