Alternator works. Had it checked. Main black wire to alternator is hot. Orange wire to alternator is hot with key on. Truck appears to be grounded. Its a 1970 Dodge sweptline. I converted it to electronic ignition. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/27/2009 11:02AM by garyo.

Remove the green wire from the alt. Connect a jumper to that terminal on the alt and touch it BRIEFLY to ground while the eng is running. If the ammeter goes to full scale, the problem is the regulator. If the ammeter does not move, the alt is bad. Its that simple. Good luckthumbs up

That short curcuiting is the 'full field' that I mentioned. You can also accomplish the same by attaching a wire loop to the 2 terminals Steve describes in his explanation, does the same thing. Alternator can run a long time that way but eventually excess heat will eat it up sooner than if it operated normally with voltage regulator.
