It seems that "stickies" and "announcements" on the message list page give no indication that there are any replies to them, much less new replies. I sure dont spend the time opening them to see if there is something there. (I use threaded format)

Nope, no "new flags" on stickies or announcements. The way they appear, I didnt even realize reply posts could be made to either, until I happened to look into that yesterday. A new flag would solve the problem, if they were there.
