The voltage regulator causes the charging system surges. Changing to electronic ignition will have no effect on that.
An electronic voltage regulator may reduce the surging. There is an electronic version available to replace the old coil type reg. Or u can change the whole system to the later isolated field charging system which uses an electronic regulator.
I would never remove the ammeter from the system. It is infinitely more useful than a volt meter in determining whether the battery is charging or not. Jimmie won't agree, but that's ok cuz I don't agree with him
I have never, in 40 yrs of driving mopars, seen one go bad. The gauge can handle more amperage than the wire can carry, so the gauge will almost never be the problem.
