Nice looking truck RJ and welcome to the forum too.
Doing some inspections on the driveline will be a lot of help to determine some of your issues with the truck. The steering can be adjusted at the box if there is play or it could be tie-rod end, draglink etc.
Updating the ignition system to a Mopar Performance electronic and Taylor sparkplug wires are worth it's weight in gold and will be pretty much be maintenance free after installed.
1st gear in a NP435 is a granny gear and pretty much only used for heavy load starting.
