The synchros "line up" gears in order to shift smoothly. Without synchros you would have to "double-clutch" or be good at meshing gears at the right RPMs.
Going from 1st to 2nd in the NP435 would allow you to shift right into 2nd gear when you push in the clutch.
Going from 1st to 2nd in the NP420 would likely grind when shifting gears.
In both transmissions, 3rd and 4th gear are synchronized to allow for easy shifting.
