I just got me a 68 D100 long bed pickup. I would like a more modern drive train and leave the body rustic. I’ve read about the crown Vic front end swap but want to make sure that works. I’d also like to add a more modern 5 speed manual behind the 318, any recommendations? And is there a rear end wi

Probably a little late here on this post.
Guy's are doing it, but it's not a bolt in deal for sure and not a conversion I would recommend to anyone, at all. It's a conversion that has been derived by backyard/shadetree mechanics not chassis fabricators.
The frame has to be narrowed to get it to fit and fully boxed.
The track of the CV is a lot wider than the trucks, so it requires running special offset wheels and they are limited or look goofy on the trucks in my opinion.
You have to modify your engine mounts and a 69-71 transmission crossmember is a must for this type of conversion, if going with a 727.
The 61-68 727 transmission cross member is not strong enough to handle the frame modifications, as it's not a structural cross member.
If you plan on using your truck as a truck, the CV front end has no axle ratings whatsoever, so keep that in mind as your truck will no longer be a truck with any axle ratings. Guy's have argued this fact, that have installed them. But there dead wrong and the CV front suspension is nothing like a truck rated front end. JMO

The only IFS front suspension I would recommend to anyone that has no intention of using their truck as a truck is Qa1 original Gerst, it's a quality suspension and has been engineered by a chassis company that understands suspension geometry, but it's still a passenger car suspension. It's all based on Mustang II suspension.

As for the rear axle, I've personally never done disc's in the rear, but supposedly Dakota and Jeep disc's from a 8.25 rear axle will fit. Only issue you will run into with the Dakota is, it will be 6-lug, Jeeps are 5-lug 4.5" bolt pattern.
Unless dead set for disc's in the rear, a real good upgrade is to get a set of backing plates and drums from a 1st Gen pickup. 80-84 are 11" x 2.5" and still use the 4.5" bolt pattern, so it's a direct bolt on and much better brakes than the stock 2". Other than the backing plates, everything is off the shelf at a parts store too.
