Funny,, I switched from Ford to Mopar in 1968. I was one of 3 service advisors for a large dealer and wrote an average of 30 ROs a day. I can remember ONE guy in 3 years complaining of his guage fluctuating slighty at times. I convinced him there was a "force field" set up at times in the correct humidity,at certain battery voltage etc etc etc while my buddy laughed his a$$ off. Even though I BSed him he never ran out of gas or overheated his engine.
I was at thet dealer for 12 years, surely if it was a prevelant problem I would have been aware.
Slight fluctuation in Fords and Mopars was considered normal. I think only the fussiest of people found it a problem. Dig for trouble and you will find it.
