Old notions die hard... Show worthy vs meticulously maintained?
Well, you can definitely do some puddle jumping in the beater that you'd think twice about doing in some gorgeously rebuilt and restored rig. I've had showboats before, and I know all too well the work that has to go into keeping something like that in pristine condition.
Btw, I take offense to the notion that an "old beater" (and I don't consider any of my trucks old beaters, just because they are old and unrestored) can't be "meticulously maintained".
The notion is as ridiculous as they come. All of my trucks are meticulously maintained, regardless of cosmetic condition. Read a current CL ad for my '68 D200, Ralph for an example. This truck has sat outside it's whole life in the Yakima desert sun, the paint's faded, the right side crank window has a crack, seat back is burned on top from the sun, etc. It was a one owner truck it's whole life, taken away from this 98 yr old guy by his family so he wouldn't be able to drive it anymore...
