I found the number on the passenger side, front of block: 2468230. It’s possIble the “6” is an “8” . And ideas? I’d like to see if the engine is the 318-3 truck poly. This engine is not original. When I found the truck in a salvage yard there was a non-running LA engine in it. I wanted the “correct” engine. The truck is a 1960 W500 Power Wagon. Technically not a Sweptline, but I figure

I have what I think is a 318-3 poly engine from the 60's. It was a replacement engine for my 1960 W500, as it had a dead 318 LA in it when I found it in a salvage yard which is not correct. I would like to know what I have, is it a "3" truck version or not? I'd like to see the engine numbers, can't seem to find them. Thanks

Good idea. I will see if they are staying put. If not I will take a center punch and "disturb" them a bit, and also put sealant on them.

Good thought. I may be pulling it because I think the oil pan gasket is leaking. I will check the clearance to the bottom.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I feel better about the situation. I'll look at the number on the front of the engine to see for sure what it "is", and report. May be in a week or so.

I don’t think it had the original tube, as it did not register any oil at all on the dipstick and it was at least about 9” long. From research it was started that it needed to be 8”. That is interesting to know that 7 quarts is OK.

I presume it is early ‘60’s. It came with this oil pan I probably need to look at the engine number on front of block.

To finish my 1960 W500 Power Wagon, I sourced a 318 poly that I believe is a 318-3. The engine is in and runs fine. I can’t recall exactly, but I think the engine needed several peripheral parts. However, the kit for rebuilding the engine may have had an oil dipstick tube that appears too long; I could not register any oil on the dipstick even with 6 quarts in it. From my research it was state

The machinist I consulted said he was not aware of pins available that were slightly over, for example 1/64 like you suggested. I wonder, if they don’t stay in place in spite of the varnish, that I’ll lift the front of the engine up enough to tap the holes for bolts.

I got 1/4” dowel pins from a machinist, who got them from a machine tool supplier. They definitely did not to be tapped in. I used Indian varnish (fir head gaskets) on the dowels and pushed them in flush.

On my Poly 318 (believe it’s a 318-3, early 60’s), it is missing the dowel pins that extend from the block and help locate/align the timing cover. There is a slight oil leak because of this that is constant when the engine is running. 1/4 machinist’s quality dowels are a little loose; can push them in by hand rather easily. Seems like they should be more of a press fit or at least need t
