I'm not certain but I think '79 360-3 and maybe other 360-3 are forged crank instead of cast crank.

Thanks for the extra info, Little Doug. That NP203 transfer case is a pretty good unit, John, if you can get it to match up. I ran them for well over 200,000 miles behind 400/440's, no problems. Just that it's chain drive and full time, not gear drive and part time. Chain drive or not, it can take some reasonable abuse, from a big block too. I used one in snow country and it was n

About the NP203 Transfer Case question, you didn't mention what advice is needed guy! Here's some info at links, hopefully to answer your questions. NP203's are pretty good boxes, fairly stout as I recall , but full time 4x4 unless converted and chain drive rather than NP205 all gear drive. Tech & detailed pics:

QuotePwrWgnDrvr Hey Jimmie fyi, Poly 318 was used until 66, LA 318 was used in 67/68 Swepts...SAME HYDRO BELL BOTH ENGINES! Thanks, Terry! Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Just that it's been long enough and also some health issues make it real hard to remember. Now I wish I had taken better notes over the years. I do definitely remember that it wasn't a real big deal, plus I w

Excellent, that's really good to hear, Kaegi, THANKS! Hopefully that will help get our other members lined up with the right folks to rebuild their steering gearboxes. Thanks!

Seems sorta strange that the steering is often one of the last things that takes priority!? There's no doubt whatsoever that I should have taken care of this long before I did! Had my priorities skewed! Hopefully others will be wiser than me and take care of business a little sooner in their projects. Afterall, when ya get right down to it we're talking a potentially life & death

On the brake thing, here's a link to a page with LOTS of Mopar brake parts, good quality stuff. Yeah, a little pricey. Y'all can do your own research on cross references and parts fitment between models, hope it helps somebody.

Well guys, the world is a safer place! Spent the warm, sunny day yesterday installing my freshly re-done Saginaw 525 recirculating-ball manual steering box that Redhead Steering remanufactured for me, into my '67 Dodge Town Wagon! These Saginaw 525's were used in many Dodge trucks at least from earliest 50's up to 70's, and I think beyond that. This is the second rework

Just for the record: what I tried to describe above is from 30-some years ago when I swapped an LA318 from a '69 Dodge 3 speed pickup in place of the original Poly in my '67 Town Wagon. Had to move the stock front motor mounts on LA block. I used the Poly bellhousing on LA318 block because that's where the rear motor mounts were. I think 1 bolt was different on bells. I kept my

Quoteyellowdog I'm not trying to be a jerk here for my first post but you don't know what you are talking about. A vacuum canister is at maximum advance at idle and as the engine speed increases the vacuum decreases retarding the spark. The distributor has a centrifugal advance that increase with speed. As for why the engine runs at start and then dies after cranking, if your truck ha

Just an FYI but the later LA318-340-360 also bolts right in, no problem, in case you can find one cheap or whatever. Just have to use 2 left side front motor mounts. As I recall for the LA's in place of Poly I had to use the left side front motor mount on right side of block, but mounted it with the 'U' shape on the front side of engine block ears or mounting tabs. The right fro

Thanks, but things are wired correctly. As mentioned, 2 other friends had the same, as in identical problem. I've been working on Mopar electrical for over 40 years now, and was a Commercial/Industrial Electrician by trade for as many years. Hobby wise I've specialized in 12V vehicle electric and custom hot rod wiring and building custom wire looms for a very long time. Things are wi

3 of us have had the same identical problem with the same Cummins 4BT engine, same Cummins 4BT starter and same type of cheapo aftermarket ignition switch for a Dodge truck. I chose to leave the pushbutton, they didn't, and there's worked fine with a good quality HD diesel rated switch, so no other problem except excessive amperage draw as described. I assume mine would work fine with a

With it correctly wired with a relay as it was before the Cummins install, the China junk key switch cannot carry enough amperage to crank the starter. It requires the HD pushbutton switch to get the job done, or else I could install a more heavy duty ignition switch. I preferred and do prefer the pushbutton. In today's world not many folks are accustomed to a starter pushbutton so it's

True, but the starter still pulls a whole bunch of amps, more than my switch can carry.

Don't know if it will help anyone but a problem came up when installing the Cummins 4BTA diesel into my Town Wagon. Everything was wired correctly and extra good grounds but the starter would barely turn over, not enough to fire engine. I had just installed a new aftermarket cheapo ignition switch so what the heck? Well, I got a 75 Amp Pushbutton switch and wired it into the start circuit

I've mentioned many times over the years here but once again - at least 50% of electrical problems are caused by a faulty ground. Gotta have a clean, bare metal to bare metal connection from engine to ground strap to firewall, and all other grounds must then be clean, bare metal to bare metal connections. On our old trucks it's common for corrosion to have built up over the years. O

The purpose of a harmonic dampener is to absorb the high frequency harmonic vibration that can cause fractures or breakage of the crankshaft. The other alternative is to have the engine internally balanced, not an inexpensive proposition. A harmonic damper is hundreds of times cheaper, easier, and also cheap than later replacing a crankshaft etc. Some good Poly info can be found at the Mopar M

Don't know if you got your problems solved yet? I'd check the vacuum advance cannister on the side of the distributor. It will have a rubber hose running up to the carburetor or just below it. Pull hose loose at carb, take off distributor cap. Suck on the carb end of the hose to draw a vacuum then plug it with the tip of your tongue, while watching points plate. This application

Maybe a combination of things. Because you say vibration developed on trip that somewhat eliminates incorrect driveline angles. There must be some angle of tube/shaft between u-joints, they'll quickly destroy themselves or other parts if they're too straight. If by any chance you slammed/lowered the truck that can mess up driveshaft angles and cause failure. Sorta doubt you'd lower

Hi guys! I know several of you have quite a few trucks including later model rigs. Saw this message posted on Diesel Truck Resource Forum and wanted to pass on the warning, just in case it applies to one of your trucks. Wear occurs between the Brake Caliper, Brake Caliper Anchor Plate, and Caliper Key/Spring on Bendix type Front Disc Brakes used on 1977-1991 Chevy/GMC and 1975-1993
