Just for laughs, the update is that the new Echlin regulator also vaporized a (the other one) wire lead to the coil after a few days... No idea what is actually going on yet, but I just took it apart and replaced the dang wire, and taped up everything that might possibly be able to accidentally ground to the body (one of the spade connectors was bent back towards the firewall, but why would'

Holy... crap. They seriously came with shock absorbers, only on the front!? All the way until 1971? This might be my new favorite car fact of all time, it's completely insane. What did the option cost, that it was too expensive for most people to spring for? I can't imagine it was more than maybe fifty bucks... $50 meant something back then, but still.. I am not surprised th

Because I am dumb, and also have never owned a 300, what is the deal with these - do the ones that came on the truck rot out all the time or something? Why do you need new ones? -Kle.

It was an Echlin that died on my after a couple years / few thousand miles, and it's an Echlin that I have so far replaced it with. It looks good, but so did the old one... The failure was an obvious QC / manufacturing defect, one of the leads to the coil vaporized. Thanks for all the input, I will look further into those Leece-Neville units, they sure look hardcore. -Kle.

Because after the stock one in my truck died after 50 years, I replaced it with a standard mechanical one and it lasted a couple years and about 5000 miles. They're all made in China nowadays, too. I could try NOS, but they are all as old as me now... Meanwhile the solid-state one in my Polara, in addition to fixing the dash/headlight pulsation problem (not an issue in the PW) has worked

Does anybody know this exists for my '69 W200 / 383 ? My old mechanical one just died Wednesday (in the charge position, of course) and I have a solid-state one in my Polara which has been good for a long time, so I wanted to get one for the truck too. Haven't been able to find one so far, though. Thanks in advance for any leads! -Kle.

If it's a bad gasket that makes the cap vent fuel vapors on hot days, why does it happen with both new and old caps? The spring on my gas cap works exactly the opposite way to what you are describing. It is set up to allow the gasketed plate to push away from the filler neck under pressure from inside the tank - if you push on the cap, there is give, even when fully tight. When I said it&

If it never lets gas pressure out, then answer me these two questions: Why, on hot days with a full tank, do I hear gas venting out of the cap? Why is the interior of the cap spring loaded like a radiator cap, if it is not indeed expected to work exactly like a radiator cap? -Kle.

I'm pretty sure they let gas pressure out by being spring-loaded, so that once the pressure gets high enough they open. When the pressure's low, they don't leak liquid or vapor gasoline. IDK where to get a non-vented cap. If I don't replace the vented cap on my '69 every 9 months or so, it leaks gas all over the side of the truck on right turns anyway, because the g

Drives a Sweptline - looked like a '69 D-200 regular cab in the few shots. I didn't see the last Superman movie, so maybe this is old news. -Kle.

Not on the topic, sorry - but the frame drawings above reminded me of a question. What are the weird "flanges" bent into the frame rails (seen above in the first image between the motor mount and the front cab mounts) for? My '69 frame has similar ones, but I can't figure them out. Nothing attaches there, and it seems like they must at least slightly weaken the frame.

If you don't mind the little bit of gasoline smell when you first get in the truck, behind the seat is not such a terrible location. The tank is already sort of "between the frame rails" there, and being up high protects it in many sorts of crashes. It's also better protected from some kinds of rust (and worse protected from others). I've been t-boned into the driver&#

If you just want power to the heater fan, why not run a new power lead direct to the battery? There must be some holes in the firewall you could thread it through. Of course, this won't do if it's a concours resto. -Kle.

Just make sure you get one with a manual choke. The Carters are good carbs, but the automatic choke on them was a terrible PITA. Pretty sure all the trucks had manual chokes anyway. -Kle.

Quote66D200GA So the carb on my truck is not a stock carb, but a quadrajet. It runs smoothly, but I don't like the idea of having a 4 barrel on a two barrel intake. I will likely go back to stock. What carb do you guys recommend? Not stock, but I'd go with a Holley 2300. Nice carb, simple install, but will probably need an adapter plate. -Kle.

Because the fluid level in the rear reservoir very slowly (like a half ounce or so every six weeks) goes down, w/o any fluid appearing outside the vehicle, and no brake grabbing issues such as are common with leaking slave cylinders. Also, I get s sucking noise on pedal application intermittently, so there is something going on vacuum-y. Both mechanics I work with independently suggested the b

Master is only 18 months old, booster could well be 47. Also, the clamp ring that holds the 2 halves of the booster together can be spun around the assembly, which seems like not a good sign to me. So... SWAG? Still have boost, plus don't really need power brakes to drive it, so this isn't urgent - I'm just trying to get the groundwork laid. -Kle.

Anyone have a source for these? Mine is starting to go, sucking brake fluid out of the master. NAPA shows no listing online, and RockAuto is out of stock on all numbers. Haven't been to the local NAPA yet so they can check hardcopy, figured I'd check here since somebody probably knows everything about the topic! Thanks, -Kle.
