Re: cooling system problems...i need some help
butch, i wish you would have just sent me an email direct if it wouldnt let you post, i was hoping you would chime in here.
i took it back to the shop that did the work on friday after work. it was done before i got the car and i wanted to verify what was done. they didnt remember the car, but when i dropped al's name (the guy i got it from) they knew exactly what i was asking about. the store manager has done bussiness with al for years. he remembered the rad, and discussing the car but never actually saw anything but the rad. anyway, the core wasnt rodded, it was replaced. the tanks are original to the car, but the core is new. he told me thats the only way al ever does a rad, he doesnt trust the 40+ year old cores. the manager then pulled the files that matched my reciept and showed me all the documentation to back it up. i was thinking, or assuming it had just been rodded out, but in fact the core had been replaced with a new 3 row core. he even remembered how beat up the old core was when it hit the shop. evidentally it had fan damage and a few good sized hits to the cooling fins. told me he wouldnt have rebuilt that core even if al had insisted.
after driving it today, i am starting to agree with jimmy. temp was about 10-15 degrees cooler today then it has been the past few weeks because it was over cast. i went to town and back with the a/c on, about 30 mile round trip, and it never got over 180. one time it creeped to 190-195 at a light but as soon as i got moving it settled back down to 180. sounds to me like i just need a better system. or as jimmy put it, repair my marginal factory set up. it just doesnt like it when the temps get in the triple digits. everything else checks out, so i dont know what else it could be. id like to think the factory set up was sufficeint, but i dont think it is any more.
