Fish, a crimped end is the same as how a garden hose end is installed. The barb goes into the hose, then a ferrule is crimped over the outside to keep the barb in and seal it. A clamp will work too, just not as pretty.
I would suggest a new hose. 40+ yrs takes its toll on rubber, no matter how gracefully it ages.
