A stock 84 360 thermo fan with a shroud has 2 and a half inch clearance. With fan flex and possible mount movement I wouldn`t go with only an inch,, leave room for error, move the rad or go electric

I don`t think the blade failed but was running too close to the rad & at high RPM sucked itself into the rad,caught and bent. Possibly that one blade got bent forward just a tad on instalation.

If it has a cracked head/block, blown gaket it will spew water out of the rad cold loaded up with the pump belt off. If you have a pressure tester you could pull the plugs, put pressure on the rad overnight, crank it in the morning and see if there is water coming out a plug hole. Don`t these engines require some head bolts to be sealed,, and intake too maybe??

IMHO when the manufacturers started allowing dealers to carry more than one brand and letting independent garages sell their product and having customers go to a dealership for warrantee work it was the beginning of the end. The way auto corperations are structured alows the high volume dealers to wield a big stick. It is hard to deacribe but it happens ar regional level with the regional managers (looking for brownie points and scared of their job)getting in bed with the dealers. Like Jimmie said,,,, try and diagnose as much as you can BEFORE you tear it down. Pressue test, compression test, leakdon test,, etc. If it is leaking that bad you may be able to at least see which bank it is leaking into. Once it is apaer you can spend a bundle on magnafluxing etc
