late in december 2008 i sold my 89 caprice to a guy. signed the title, collected the money and off he went. your typical sales deal, smooth and easy. friday i get a call from el paso, the guy on the phone says he works for the impound yard and they have my car in thier yard and want to know when i plan on getting it, or if i want to surrender it to them. WTF???? seems the jackass i mentioned before never bothered to swap the title to his name. the car was picked up in airport short term parking because the fee he had paid expired. this was on the 2nd, its now a week later and no one has tried to claim the car, so they did a title search and came up with me. so yesterday i went to the dmv, pulled a copy of the title and went and bailed the car out. at first i was gonna say to hell with it, its not my problem, but then i got to thinking about all the "free" parts that car held that would work so well on my nova..... well i just couldnt resist. so now its in my yard, and as of yet, no one has heard from the "owner".
so, im being told i should hold it for 30 days to see if the guy shows up. just in case there is a legit reason the car was impounded. let him repay me for the impound fees, time, gas etc etc that i was out to save it and "be the nice guy". on one hand i agree, and almost feel like that what i would hope someone would do for me.
on the other hand, he doesnt have my number, doesnt know where i live, and i no longer work in the office i did the deal from (but they know how to contact me)... so contacting me is gonna be tough. then theres the fact that its been a year and 7 months and he still hasnt transferred title
. that could have gotten me in some serious trouble, so the urge to not be nice is there. i know i am under no legal obligation to cut the nimrod any slack, the car is mine, i have the title and i could tell him to bite me if he ever does show up. just curious what you guys think???
