got my sherriff buddy looking into it for me. curious to see what local law says. i was more curious, regaurdless of "legal" what the basic opinions here would be. im on the fence with the whole thing, even wondering at this point if i should have even gotten involved or just released the car to the wrecking yard.
like jimmie i have been going thru the numerous "what if" scenarios. the guy seemed on the up and up. college student, had a job, met the girlfriend, i saw his licence, and verified residence since i financed the car thru him. even had 5 verified references. he never missed a payment and insured the car(at least while i was involved), he even repaired a few of the problems i told him about while he was paying on it, and installed a nice stereo (still in the car btw). but the key there is i had contact info for him, once the deal was done i pitched all that stuff expecting to never see or hear from him again. kinda wishing i had those contact/reference numbers now. judging by the state of the car, he parked it with intentions to return and something happened to delay that, or he was in such a hurry to get out of town that all the items left in the car didnt matter. both of which can send the mind reeling on the what ifs...lol
as far as titling the car, you would have to understand things around here. the car is registered in nm, he lived in texas. texas doesnt care if your registration is out of state and expired, "its not thier problem" same if your in nm with expired texas tags. right or wrong its what i personally have experienced. when i got the car it was on expired texas tags, i insured it and drove it for 3 years that way... before you get on to me, it was registered to my deceased mother, no chance of getting anyone in trouble. i got stopped twice by nm local law and once by state law and only one of them even mentioned the expired tags from texas. as long as you have a licence and insureance they dont care about the other states tags.
most of whats next will depend on what the sherriff tells me, but i guess for now ill wait and see if he shows back up and keep the mind busy with the what ifs and all the stories that produces....lol
