I read this in the morning paper. You can't stress safety too much. I hope we all know better but I just had a reminder of what being careless, or I probably should say foolish, will get you. Yesterday about two miles from my house a guy was working under his car supported only by a jack. The car rolled and now the guy is dead. Jack stands are not expensive, so get some good ones if you don&

I had a lot of spare time this past weekend and was just adding my replys to keep the post alive. No hard feelings and I hope you didn't take it the wrong way. This forum has a good group of folks participating and I enjoy the sparing that comes up occasionally, especially between a certain two guys, LOL. I was just playing devil's advocate to keep the discussion going and see what othe

QuotePaul in Kempner, TX Trying to move this discussion away from the term, "freeze plugs" is like asking someone not to stare at a large pimple on someone's nose. You haven't said what you think they should be called. Straighten us out.

"Saying put ether in it and "see if it cranks" makes no sense... and can be really confusing to someone trying to get an engine running." If that confused them they probably shouldn't be working on it anyway. Since the term "crank" came from the time when you actually stood in front and spun the engine with a real crank, I could argue that the term "

I'm 68 and been referring to them as freeze plugs as long as I remember but I guess I'll have to stop that now. I think more people will know what I'm referring to than if I use the term frost plugs or core plugs but I'll just have to educate them on the correct terminalogy. Also from now on out I'll start my engines instead of cranking them. But what do I say when I want

Quotebeemrmax "The first thing I do in that situation is to hit it with some starting fluid and see if it tries to crank." Uhhhh, say what? Sorry to mince words words here, but when somethin don't run it's really helpful if people describe things in a way that's not confusing, like "turning over" used for starting (a term I can't stand myself). We don't have any assembly plants in the Atlanta area any more. The Lakewood Chevy plant closed and got mostly torn down in the eighties. A few years ago the Ford plant closed and is now being demolished. Last year the BOP (Buick, Olds, Pontiac) assembly plant closed and is also now being torn down. It's kind of sad to see them go. The old Chevy plant and the Ford plant were rated highe

He has voltage to the coil so that rules out the ballast or fuseable links. I would first use the starting fluid to determine if it's a fuel or fire problem. You can do that without getting your hands dirty, LOL. Just be sure you spray it and stand back before you try to start it or you might create a fire problem of a different nature. BTW, Jim, is it a four or five pin ECU?

Jim, The first thing I do in that situation is to hit it with some starting fluid and see if it tries to crank. Do this several times to make sure that it will always crank with the starting fluid. If it starts and dies every time then you must have a fuel problem. If it doesn't try to start, First check to see if you are getting any fire from the coil. Pull the wire out of the distributor a

Sounds like a fun day, DB, enjoy it. For more auto nostalgia check out the latest Hot Rod magazine. It has an article about closed and abandoned auto factories in Detroit with lots of pictures.

Gordo, If I had a truck that could use that trim I would be talking to you. I like that trim on a pre-65 truck. FYI, I bought a full set of upper trim for my truck from Collectors Auto Supply which I think is in Canada some where north of Washington state. Since it is probably the only existing NOS set of 69 trim I asked them to package it very securely even if it added a lot of weight and shippi

Great looking truck. Post up some more pics of it on the ground. We are all wishing we had a lift like that also. I'd have one already if I had a space with a high enough ceiling.

Norm, I might have been wrong in stating that the cup style wouldn't work in a block that originally had the flat (I know that they are not exactly flat) kind. The reason I assumed that was because I think the flat freeze plugs came in the same sizes as the cup style, I.E, 1 1/2 or 1 3/8, so a 1 1/2 cup style couldn't go into a block that took a 1 1/2 flat style. I could be rememberi

Apparently some on the forum have never seen the old style concave freeze plugs. They were in the early big block Mopar engines and 318s also. I remember changing them but I've had so many Mopars since 1956 when I got my first car that I don't remember which engine it was. Anyway, for everyone's information, here's a pic of what they looked like. It's not a very good pic

DB, you are one year off on Dodges getting a V8. In 1953 Dodge had a major style change and got a V8 then. I was 11 years old when they came out and I fell in love with a new Dodge convertible. V8/3spd with wire wheels. I never got one and now can't afford one even if I found one.

Forgot to mention: That huge oil spot under my truck is NOT from my truck. My nephew came for a visit in a Ford F250 and that appeared under it. I knew that cats mark their territory but I didn't know trucks did, LOL.

JimC, I'm glad to hear that you are coming. I will go to early church service and be home by 11:00, so any time after that is fine with me. Congratulations to your Mom for making it to the century mark. Think of all the changes she's seen in the 100 years. Russ R., What do you think? When are you planning on being here. Let's just plan on getting together at my house so we will ha

Did the ones you got on Ebay have any kind of stiffener in them? The only rubber part that I've seen that had a metal stiffener was the verticle division bar seal that the vent window closes to. The replacements that I gor for those had a plastic stiffener that wasn't as rigid as the originals.

Glad you're feeling better, Russ. For any others who would like to get together, my cell number is 770-262-4106. Give me a call if you need directions or have any suggestions as to where we can get together. If there's no other suggestion we can plan on having it at my house. No one other than Russ and Russ have confirmed that they are coming but I hope some of you are planning on it.

That's interesting, I've never seen any backing on them. It may have stopped somewhere between 62 and 69. I have purchased three used doors and had two originals and none of them had any backing on the strips. I don't know exactly what year two of the doors were but all had the push button handles. One of the doors was off of a 73 D500 which still used the sweptline style cab. I c

I don't think that those ever had any kind of backing, only the metal clips that fit into the holes. They can be a real p.i.t.a. to get right. Mine went on fine and work as they should. I helped a friend install a set of his truck and they seemed to be too tight and wanted to fold up when you rolled the window up and down. The glass on my truck is original and less than 1/4 inch thick. Now I

Jimc, That's a good point to mention about the fuel guage. I don't know why Chrysler used an external regulator on some vehicles and built it into the fuel guage on some. There's also two different fuel guages depending on whether the panel has an oil guage or light, due to the extra load of the added guage. My guess would be that it was the cheapest way to do it. I talked to Russ

QuoteWhite Fargo Opinions are cheep and plenty and this is mine. I agree about the windings but I wonder about the pulsing signal the control emits. Could it be that direct curent would send the guages over the top or pulsing is to aid in slowing down the sensitivity ?? I don`t know if 6 volt systems used a regulator too??? anybody work on them?? Just my 2 cents but I am happy to see correction
